The Chinatown Historic District includes some 350 buildings along Stockton Street, Grant Avenue, Kearney Street, and connecting sidestreets and alleys between Broadway and Bush in San Francisco ./rhe district encompasses the area historically and popularly identified as the heart of the Chinese community. Although the Chinese first settled in the area in the 1850s, the existing buildings nearly all date from the period of reconstruction that followed the devastating 1906 earthquake/fire. Subsequent alterations, modernization, and new construction are evident throughout the district, but nearly all these changes reflect some perception of the community’s basic character or function and contribute to its significance as a vital city neighborhood.
