Other Information: In regard to california register criterion 1 (history/events) this property is considered under the 1906 earthquake and fire reconstruction context of the historic context statement, market & octavia neighborhood plan area, since it is both an identified building type (commercial) and dates from the period of significance (1906-1929) of that context. There is no indication the property is eligible for listing in the california register under criterion 2 (important persons), criterion 3 (design/construction), or criterion 4 (information potential). Criterion 1: 2051 market street was constructed in 1913 on formerly vacant land by the architect william h. Crim. Crim was born in san francisco in 1897. His notable buildings include the pacific coast envelope building at 2nd and harrison streets, the mission savings bank building, several christian science churches, and the el capitan theater in the mission. For some time crim practiced in partnership with earl scott (crim & scott) but this partnership dissolved in 1911. (continued) nightingale owned this lot from at least the early 1890s though 1914, when he conveyed the property to eleven of his offspring. Prior to the earthquake, the lot contained a building described by the 1889 sanborn map as "the oriel," which contained several small shops. Nightingale quickly rebuilt after the fire, and the 1908 city directory describes the building as housing a cigar shop and a liquor store. In 1910, the building was occupied by the nevada meat co. And a liquor shop. The 1913 sanborn map shows the present building housing shops and a restaurant. The 1950 sanborn map shows the current building housing several small shops containing painting, wallpapering, and gardening businesses. City directories from the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s identify they building as housing the bohemian garden ballroom, a paint company, and other businesses. In recent years the building housed a brazilian nightclub and a chinese restaurant. It is now vacant. The building was constructed as single-story retail, a use pattern which it retains today. Quite common along market street and neighborhood commercial streets, single-story retail buildings were most commonly built after the 1906 earthquake with the proceeds of insurance settlements. Based on simple construction techniques and lack of complex architectural detailing, it is apparent that many single-story retail buildings were erected quickly in order to establish a commercial presence on a given lot without a substantial outlay of funds. Called ¿taxpayer blocks¿ on the east coast, this building type was designed to generate revenue as quickly as possible. Many were eventually demolished and replaced with larger, more permanent buildings with office or residential floors above. Others were clearly designed to accommodate extra floors in anticipation of future expansion. Several good examples exist along market street, such as the huston building, at sixteenth and market street. As a steel-frame building, it is likely that 1600-1612 market was designed to accommodate additional floors if the demand presented itself. 1600-1612 market street, with its circa 1906 construction date, market street corridor location, and single story retail building typology, clearly expresses an association with a broad pattern of san francisco history. Integrity: 1600-1612 market street appears to have undergone substantial alterations since its construction. Alterations on the market street elevation include a modern storefront with metal-frame doors and windows in the first four bays with the remainder of the openings on the elevation in-filled. The north (rose street) elevation has three sets of solid, metal service doors. The building has no architectural decoration. The building retains the following aspects of integrity: location and setting. Due to the alterations above the building does not retain integrity of design, materials, workmanship, feeling or association. Conclusion: 1600-1612 market street does not appear to be eligible for the national register of historic places, california register of historical resources or local designation under any criterion. Although the construction date, building location and building typology demonstrate an association with the 1906 earthquake and fire reconstruction context, it no longer accurately expresses this association due to the alterations to the exterior. As the building no longer conveys its original appearance at the time of construction, it does not clearly express an association with any broad pattern of events in san francisco history, the state of california, or significant persons. Nor does it represent the work of master architects. It no longer embodies the distinctive characteristics of a type, period, region, or method of construction, and it does not possess high artistic values.
